Art therapy utilises art and verbal communication as modes of self-expression. It aims to reduce distress and improve social, emotional and mental health by promoting insight, self-compassion and a sense of agency and self-worth —

What is it?

Nature-Based Environmental Arts Therapy is the therapeutic use of natural materials, locations, themes and cycles. It is rooted in the same principles as Art Therapy but incorporates social & environmental justice theories and ecopsychotherapy approaches.

The context and references are drawn from the natural world, using myths and metaphors that relate to the time of the year and the geographical and cultural location within which the therapy takes place.

Materials used are earth-sensitive, natural and sustainable. Clients are encouraged to create and explore art materials without fear of being ‘wasteful’ or causing harm to others or the environment through the use of unethical, toxic or hazardous materials.

Typically, a range of natural art materials are provided, where you would be welcome to use them in any way you wish. Being skilled in art or in a craft is not necessary to benefit. Instead, there is a need to be open to the possibilities of the process involved.

Like with any therapy, the process can be challenging as uncomfortable feelings and painful memories may emerge.

At the heart of all successful therapies is a strong, reliable and robust relationship.

Together, we would attempt to make sense of the art objects that you have made, considering the significance of them in relation to your relationships and the thoughts you have, both currently and perhaps much earlier on in your life.

What can I expect?

Nature-based Art Therapy is suitable for all ages and every stage of life, including those whose lives have been affected by difficult life experiences, systemic inequality and oppression, neurodiversity, illness and/or disability.

I work with young people, adults and older adults who have a range of difficulties and diagnoses. I have experience in treating a range of psychological and emotional disorders, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, loss and bereavement and relationship problems.

I draw upon psychodynamic theory, which explores both conscious and unconscious processes.
