Hatched 2024

Clay, glaze, iron

A hooded “Maleficent” figure holding a spider monkey. I think of the figure as someone you’d meet in a fairytale, who could be perceived as a big bad wolf, or also the Baba Yaga. I think of the monkey as sometimes feeling ghostly and haunting, but also as a kind of “Navi” fairy companion who occasionally shouts, “Hey listen!” while playing with time to the hum of an ocarina.

I think this piece is about holding reality/unreality, sometimes in unequal measures. While making it, I had thoughts about societal ideas surrounding “madness” and the interaction between internal and external forces.
